The Significance Of German Fasching Masks
Fasching Festival is a pre-Lent celebration primarily celebrated in South-west Germany. Rooted in medieval traditions, Fasching involves its townspeople wearing elaborate wooden masks in an effort to drive away evil spirits and to welcome the arrival of warmer weather. During medieval times, masks allowed commoners to interact with higher social classes and mock the noble without consequence. Today, people from all ages take part in the festivities. Fasching lasts for five days, with a variety of lively festivities that include parades, parties, and humorous performances mocking people & public figures. The carved wooden masks are an important aspect of this festival, adding intrigue and tradition to the festivities.
