Keep An Eye on the Weather With A Barometer
Have you ever considered adding a barometer to your life? Today, most of us take the ability to find out the weather for granted. Not even a century ago, weather forecasting beyond the immediate was a challenging task, where one of the best ways to indicate coming weather patterns was to personally monitor changes in air pressure. Today, barometers are a fantastic aesthetic and functional addition to any home that help to make the job of weather forecasting that much easier.
Some History on Barometers
The idea of the Barometer was first conceived in 1643 by Italian physicist Evangelista Torricelli in the form of a mercury Barometer. Many other varieties of Barometers were later invented using multiple different methods, such as a water barometer, MEM’s barometers which you will find in many smartphones today and of course, aneroid barometers which are the main type of barometer you’ll find online and in-store at the Clock Shop.
The aneroid barometer was invented in 1844 by French scientist Lucien Vidi. It measures air pressure without the use of liquid, instead using a small, flexible metal box called an aneroid cell, made from an alloy of copper and beryllium. Small changes in external air pressure cause the cell to expand or contract, with this expansion and contraction driving mechanical levers. Many models include a manually set needle which is used to mark the current measurement so a change can be seen on the face of the aneroid barometer. This type of barometer is common in homes and boats, and is also used in meteorology.
