In practice, the movement of your arms while swimming or the force of hitting the water creates significantly higher pressure than the depth alone suggests. Consequently, a 10 ATM watch is ideal for surface swimming, snorkelling and casual water sports, but it is not designed for the rigours of scuba diving. For deep-sea diving, a 20 ATM rating is required to ensure the seals can handle the increased force.
