The strike chain wheel is the gear connected to the chain and weight that powers the strike train, which operates the cuckoo call and striking sounds on the hour (and sometimes half-hour). As the strike-side weight slowly descends over the course of eight days, it turns the strike chain wheel, which transmits energy through a series of gears to activate the cuckoo mechanism, lift the bellows for sound, move the bird, and trigger the striking hammer. This wheel ensures the clock strikes accurately and reliably, and if it becomes damaged or misaligned, the cuckoo or strike function may fail.
