The Origins Of The German Bridal Cup
So the story goes...
A long time ago in the German city of Nuremberg, a goldsmith and a young lady of noble status fell in love and wanted to marry. The young ladys father did not approve of the proposal and created a ruse to prevent his daughter from marrying the poor man. His conditions stated that the wedding was only allowed to take place provided the goldsmith succeesed in making a vessel in which the bride and the groom could drink together without spilling any of its contents. He was so confident that this task was impossible task and was certain that the wedding would not go ahead. Determined and inspired by love, the goldsmith succeeded in creating the unique drinking vessel. Much to the fathers dismay, the wedding went ahead and the newlyweds lived happily ever after. The bridal cup from then on served as a romantic tradition as charming today as it was hundreds of years ago, representing a symbol of love, faithfulness and good luck to any newlywed couple who drinks from the cup.

What Makes a Beer Stein Authentic?
The clay to produce an authentic beer stein comes only from the Westerwald region in Germany, an area renowned for its high quality clay. Clock Shop stocks authentic beer steins manufactured by King Works (King Werks - Wuerfel & Mueller GmbH and Co. KG), one of the only remaining manufacturers in this region.
It is important to note that many online retailers sell "German Beer Steins'' however many of these steins are similar to our souvenir stein range and are copies of authentic German steins that are not necessarily manufactured in Germany. They typically look very similar in design, however the clay used to make them is inferior to that which comes from the Westerwald region. King Werks beer steins are often based on antique designs, created by highly skilled potters that have been practicing the centuries old craft of stein making for years.
