A Limited Edition Clock That Features A Real Forest Mushroom
Attention to detail is easily apparent with this exquisite 8 Day Mechanical Carved Cuckoo Clock by German master carver GERHARD SCHMIEDER from Schonach in the Black Forest in Germany.
Measuring 60cm in height*, this exquisite limited edition hand-carved clock provides a truly unique take on a cuckoo clock design, representing a dwarf house with 2 dwarves surrounding the house and another on the roof. Perhaps the most unique aspect of this clock is the addition of a real forest mushroom that has been collected from the Black Forest, glazed and set as the roof of the dwarf house. Additional features include a beautiful wooden dial in the centre of the house which draws the eye, a hand carved forest backboard, along with beautiful ornamental forest pieces that help to set the scene perfectly.
At the base of the clock, a timber pendulum hangs alongside the weights, both of which have some carved elements. As this clock is an 8 day mechanism, the weights need to be wound once a week. The in-built cuckoo of this clock calls the time each hour and once on the half hour through a door that opens, and this clock does not play any music.
This exceptionally carved cuckoo clock by Gerhard Schmieder features deep and detailed carvings, with attention to detail that is clearly evident. It is qualities like these that make Master Carver clocks truly stand out from the rest. The finished products are truly spectacular, and the journey of this clock from the design and the planning stages in Gerhards workshop, to receiving the finished product is wonderful to watch.
Take A Closer Look At The Clock
Gerhard Schmieder - A Black Forest Master Carver
Gerhard Schmieder grew up amongst the world of Black Forest cuckoo clock production, and took a keen interest at a young age. He began working in the field at the age of 16, and by the age of 27, he earned his master craftsmanship. Just over a decade later, Gerhard began his own business designing and creating unique and exclusive cuckoo clocks made from wood in 2005, and in the same year he also founded the MCC Club (Master Carvers Club). The Master Carvers Club represents the essence of high quality, exclusiveness and true handicraft of cuckoo clock production, ensuring that every single clock produced is truly unique and one of a kind. In a world where the number of local wood carvers and sculptors are declining, Gerhard provides products for well known Black Forest clock manufacturers, where the appreciation for true craftsmanship and artistic quality reigns high.
Benefits of a Mechanical Cuckoo Clock
Black Forest mechanical cuckoo clocks are weight driven and are available in two different movements:
- 1 Day Movement - you wind the clock by pulling the chain and winding the weights once a day
- 8 Day Movement - you wind the clock by pulling the chain and winding the weights once a week
Each mechanical cuckoo clock will have either two or three weights; two weights for cuckoo only and three weights for cuckoo and music. One weight runs the clock movement and hands that show the time and the second weight drives the cuckoo calling mechanism. The cuckoo sound is produced using bellows that push air through two whistles creating the 'cook' and 'coo' sounds respectively. If you choose to also have music with your mechanical cuckoo clock, the third weight drives a traditional mechanical music box movement with a pinned cylinder that plucks notes on a 'comb' to produce a melody.
